The photographs on Devi-Durga are really wonderful. It is very difficult to recognize whether the celebration was held in India or in USA.....totally a bengali atmosphere;even there is a person who wore the Dhuti & Punjabi......the dresses of the ladies do not need to be spelled out.I have enjoyed merrily.

Simply wonderful!!! It was totally impressive to see that a comunity can so closely hold on to their roots and culture. I never knew that there was such a big Bengali congregation at St Louis. Been to St Louis last December, but it always seemed that I could have enjoyed more in there... now I know why...I missed on the opportunity of meeting the real Bangalis in there! Dear Dada/ Boudi,

Happy Bijoya!

I'm Rahul, doing my Masters in Film Direction in California Institute of the Arts. I have just enrolled this fall session- so it hasn't been that long for me in this country. School's great- CalArts is ranked among one of the four best schools for Film Direction. We're getting intensive courses in films, theatre and the arts and getting to meet artists, dancers and musicians, etc. But there's not much of an Indian community in school. And by the end of the day, you wish for some people of your own to have a chai with and talk to. So I'm hoping to get to know some of you and feel more at home and maybe not feel that lonely.

looking forward to hear from you warm regards Rahul, CalArts, CA.

I am sure there is continuous improvements you are making in the llifestyles of the community over there. My best wishes to you all. Please do not hesitate if I can be of any help beyond the few words of inspiration. Suggest you can add little tunes and few script of Bengali to keep the moods flowing beyond boundaries. You can develop a directory of special events from undivided/divided Bengal with birthdays of celebrities etc as a calender and a regular daily mail to all the subscribers to add the flavour. I know stupendous work but a humble beginning can be made. Thanks and regards Asesh

Immediately after the Bangamela 2005 program in Chicago, certain members of the Punascha group indulged in making a great deal of negative comments on the performance of Lee-Ellen Sibley. Mrs. Sibley is the wife of the former US Consul-General in Kolkata. During her stay in Kolkata she developed a tremendous admiration for Rabindrasangeet after hearing Pramita Mullick's renditions. With her background as an opera singer she wanted to explore what she termed' the most beautiful music ' she had ever heard. She begged Pramita Mullick to teach her how to sing some of Tagore's songs. Obviously, we did not expect her to sing like Suchitra Mitra! But surely, we could at least show her a little bit of appreciation in return for the love she has shown for Bengali culture. We always complain that most non-Bengalis do not support our programs; yet, when someone does come forward with so much enthusiasm and respect for our heritage we find ways to ridicule them! For the information of those who don't know, Lee-Ellen Sibley had a full program at the New York Banga Sammelan(Madison Square Garden) that included dance numbers by Sanchita Bhattacharya with original music composed by Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya. In Chicago she only sang the songs that were part of the NY program. During her stay in Kolkata, Lee-Ellen also found time for social welfare projects, one of them being the construction of public toilets in the small towns of West Bengal. After her performance in Chicago several of us went backstage to thank her for her effort and particularly for singing the last line of the song, America the Beautiful as' America and India , God shed His grace on thee' Someone told me she held up the start of Punascha's play ;it didn't bother us. We never cared for that 'natok' anyway. Ranjit Sarkar St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

I think it is a mistake to edit or delete certain comments from this section unless it is clearly offensive or is in bad taste. Everybody, particularly all Punascha members, has a right to express their feelings and at least that was the idea behind the creation of this section in this webpage in 2001. Controversy is sometimes good for the community, it creates healthy discussions. We do not live in a closed society. We should remember that before we act. Ashim Ghosh, Past President of Punascha

This comment is in response to Mr. Ranjit Sarkar’s comment posted above. Though I was never a part of the ‘certain members of the Punascha group’, as referred by Mr. Sarkar, however, as part of the Punascha family, I take his comment with serious offense. Neither I support, nor I intend to cover up “A great deal of negative comments on the performance of Lee-Ellen Sibley.” However, in this context I would like to make a few comments. First of all, though Mr. Sarkar displayed high admiration for Mrs. Sibley’s performance and even provided a detail score of her background and social status (though I fail to find any appropriate reason or necessity of providing her social status and/or background in this context), he actually failed to mention her name correctly. It is not ‘Lee-Ellen Sibley’; her actual name is Lee-Alison Sibley. I simply wanted to clarify that, just to make sure we are talking about the same person. Mr. Sarkar, being a long time resident of United States, sure understands the importance of proper spelling and pronunciation of any individual’s name; I hope. Secondly, I must say, it is highly distasteful on Mr. Sarkar’s part to post this insulting comment on Website, which is published publicly to the whole world. As part of the same Punascha organization, Mr. Sarkar, not only displayed his disrespect to his fellow members, but also by bringing it out to the whole world, he insulted his organization Punascha. Whatever the comments were made by some of the Punascha members (I am not aware of any such comment, by the way), I am sure it was exchanged in between close friends. However, if Mr. Sarkar heard any negative comment about Mrs. Sibley’s performance, instead of posting it on the Website much later, he should have talked to those individuals on the spot and should have expressed his views with them at personal level. That would have been courageous and honest. Also it would have shown sincerity on Mr. Sarkar’s part towards his appreciation for Mrs. Sibley’s performance. Though I reserve my own comment about Mrs. Sibley’s performance at Bangamela 2005, however, I must add, neither the material nor the pedigree makes any individual great. At some point of our life, we must learn the proper art of ‘art appreciation’ if we truly intend to impose us as a true lover of art. Now, in response to the last sentence of his comment, where Mr. Sarkar wrote, “We never cared for that ‘natok’, I would like to mention a few things. Mr. Sarkar and anybody else have every right not to care for ‘that natok’ that Punascha members staged in Chicago. I would simply like to say, all the members worked very hard and gave their hundred percent effort to make ‘that natok’ successful. And as a part of that group, it is my responsibility to counter any derogatory comment about their effort. First of all, as I mentioned earlier, “We must learn the proper art of art appreciation” before we pass a negative comment. From the very beginning of the conception of ‘that natok’ I knew and publicly informed ‘that natok’ was not meant for everybody. The response we (The Same Punascha Group) received from the audience after the show was overwhelming for us. In the hotel, at the parking lot, inside the elevator, everywhere people made us to pause and accept their appreciation for ‘that natok.’ We are sincerely grateful to the audience of Bangamela 2005 for their positive comments and encouragement about ‘that natok.’ May I mention, whereas Mr. Sarkar, found it to be offensive to make a negative comment about a “Non-Bengali” for her effort and her performance, the same Mr. Sarkar in his same statement passed a negative comment toward the sincere effort and performance about his fellow Punascha members. “Certain members of the Punascha group” offended Mr. Sarkar and in great articulation he wrote, “Obviously, we did not expect her to sing like Suchitra Mitra! But surely, we could at least show her a little bit of appreciation in return for the love she has shown for Bengali culture,” May I ask, what happened to the same theory and logic (if any) when it came time to appreciate the effort and love towards our Bengali culture by two of our very young boys who were born and brought up in the United States? Moreover, did Mr. Sarkar expect the rest of the group to perform like Shambhu Mitra? Please allow me to borrow from Mr. Sarkar’s well-articulated comment where he wrote, “We always complain that most non-Bengalis do not support our programs; yet, when someone does come forward with so much enthusiasm and respect for our heritage we find ways to ridicule them!” With all due respect, I must say, isn’t that what exactly has done by Mr. Sarkar by trying to ridicule the enthusiasm and respect of Punascha members. Isn’t that what is called hypocrisy!!! Or, was it just an act of impulse!!! In our language there is a saying, “Gyeo jogi bheekh paaye naa.” In conclusion, I must say, I strongly believe, every human being is entitled to his/her opinion. Mr. Sarkar has expressed his opinion very clearly. Hope, I was able to express mine too. However, I would certainly hope this exchange of personal views and comments would not stain our mutual respect for each other. Prabir Das. St. Louis, Missouri.

I am not sure in what context Mr. Ghosh made this irrelevant comment. However, I agree with him in his view that everybody has a right to express their feelings, though, I am not sure if controversy is good for any community, specially for a close knit and small community like Punascha. On September 15, 2005 at 14:45:21 hours some unidentified person posted the above note with a distinct tone of taunt towards our member Mr. Ranjit Sarkar. In my earlier comment I stated that, we do not edit or delete any comment from this page. However, I must mention that this type of offensive and obnoxious comments will not be tolerated on this web site. In my earlier comment though I have expressed differences between the views and opinions of Mr. Sarkar and myself, it was done simply to keep the record straight. I hold very high regard for Mr. Sarkar and his integrity towards our Bengali culture and heritage. As one may notice, 99 per cent of the comments on this page display positive thoughts. On behalf of punaschaonline, I appreciate that. If anybody has any legitimate grievances or comments, first try to resolve it at personal level. However, your constructive criticism is always welcome. While posting a note on this site, please be sure to remain decent with your thoughts and words. Prabir Das. Punaschaonline.
